Last night I made the time to sit down and watch the film Helvetica by Gary Hustwit in association with Veer. This Film was full of inspiration and packed with perspectives from some of the world's greatest graphic designers, such as Massimo Vignelli, David Carson, Paula Scher and Stefan Segmeister, just to name a few. Some people would say this film had no narrative and is just a bunch of interviews linked together to make a film. Although somewhat true, I found myself intrigued by the ability to hear what these designers have to say as well as being able to see them in their creative environment. In some cases during the film you will even get the chance to see their process, as the designers thumb through archives of their work, some explaining why they love to use Helvetica and others on why they choose to stay away from it. As a young designer, it was great to see how such a basic font like Helvetica is used for thousands of purposes, but if treated right can evoke so many different emotions and be truly unique to its purpose. To sum it all up. If you ever want to get inspired and feel the need to shut down Adobe, but not your creative side, download Helvetica from itunes
